The federal government, under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) at HealthCare.gov, offers an individual insurance Marketplace where you can shop for insurance. AZ Health Insurance Brokers can guide you through the process, with free expert help to find an ACA Marketplace plan that works for your unique needs and budget.
There are specific open enrollment times when individuals may sign up for a plan through the ACA Marketplace, typically from November 1 through January 15 of each year. If you’re outside of those dates, you may still be able to get an ACA Marketplace plan if you qualify for a special enrollment period. Events that qualify someone for a special enrollment period include marriage, divorce, moving and losing health insurance coverage through work.
If you recently went through a life change, such as losing a job, you may qualify for insurance through the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, or COBRA. Your former employer must notify you that COBRA is an option, and you’ll typically have 60 days from the time you’re notified to elect to get COBRA continuation coverage. If you at first say no to COBRA but change your mind within the 60-day period, you can still sign up for COBRA.
COBRA continuation coverage may last anywhere from 18 to 36 months, depending on the qualifying event. Typically, COBRA individual health insurance will be more expensive than what you were previously paying under an old plan, which is one reason why it makes sense to compare COBRA pricing to another option, like private individual insurance.
Ambetter is a top ACA Marketplace insurer, offering state-to-state reciprocity. This makes it a good option if you travel frequently or live in different states throughout the year.

In addition to traditional health insurance, there are other types of insurance related to your health and well-being that you might be interested in. Consider the following options.
Dental Insurance
Dental health is an important part of your overall health. With dental insurance, you can typically get coverage for two preventive checkups per year and for issues like cavities.
Without dental coverage, the cost for expenses like a root canal, crown or tooth extraction could add up to thousands of dollars. Check out our dental insurance guide below to get a view of dental costs with dental insurance versus without dental insurance.
Life Insurance
If you have someone in your life you want to continue to provide for in the event you pass on, a life insurance policy provides peace of mind. Life insurance provides a death benefit, should the policyholder pass away. If you’re a parent or have another loved one you want to leave a legacy for, these affordable policies can ensure they’re protected.
Some life insurance policies can even act as investment vehicles that you can draw money out of while you’re still alive. To learn more about various life insurance policies, from term life insurance to whole life insurance, click on our guide below.
Disability Insurance
Disability insurance is an additional safeguard that protects a covered individual, should they experience a disability that prevents them from being able to work for an extended period of time. This type of insurance can cover disabilities related to physical health and sickness, as well as mental health.
Accident Insurance
Accident insurance is similar to disability insurance, in that it provides an additional safeguard that the covered individual will be protected, should they experience an accident that keeps them away from work for a prolonged period of time. This type of insurance can be financially beneficial should you experience an expensive accident that significantly impacts your work or livelihood.
Critical Illness Insurance
Critical illnesses, such as cancer, are more costly and can impact an individual for a longer period of time compared to health expenses like wellness treatment or one-off medical procedures. The addition of critical illness insurance can protect you if you’re covered and experience a covered critical illness, such as:
Critical illnesses are difficult to plan for, so having this additional coverage can provide peace of mind should they impact the insured policyholder.
There are also alternatives to traditional health insurance that individuals may be provided through their work or that they may seek out individually. These include health reimbursement arrangements (HRAs), flexible spending accounts (FSAs) and health savings accounts (HSAs). If you’re using one and want to learn about other options, or you want to supplement a savings account for healthcare with traditional health insurance, AZ Health Insurance Brokers is here to help.
A health savings account (HSA) is a health savings plan employees (and their employers) can contribute to for medical expenses tax-free. Balances roll over each year, and HSA contributions always remain in the account until the funds are used.
HSA plans pair with high deductible health plans, which typically have lower monthly premiums. An employer must offer an HDHP as a group health insurance plan in order to provide an HSA plan.
If you aren’t getting the health insurance coverage you need with an HDHP and HSA, there may be other traditional health insurance plans that may make sense for your situation.
A health reimbursement arrangement (HRA) is an alternative to traditional group health insurance, where a small business owner provides tax-free healthcare reimbursement to employees. HRAs may provide coverage for healthcare costs like copays, deductibles, prescriptions and health insurance premiums. Types of HRAs include:
If you have an HRA, you can use coverage from it to cover traditional health insurance premium costs. We can help you choose a health insurance plan that works for your budget and how much coverage you’re receiving from an HRA.
Health flexible spending accounts work similarly to HSAs. An employee can contribute funds tax-free and save money for paying out-of-pocket healthcare costs, like copayments, coinsurance, a deductible and some prescriptions.
With an FSA, the contributions are typically “use it or lose it”, which means funds don’t roll over unlimited every year. You also aren’t able to use FSA funds with ACA Marketplace plans. Talk with the AZ Health Insurance Brokers experts to learn more about how to optimize your FSA contribution saving and spending.
While many people get health insurance coverage through work, if you’re your own boss, you have options. More and more people are becoming self-employed or gig workers. Private health insurance can be customized to fit your exact needs and budget.
Get a free self-employed health insurance consultation to learn about your options. Depending on when you’re applying, you may also qualify for other plans, like ACA Marketplace insurance.
Not having health insurance puts you at financial risk for having to pay for your own medical costs, which can add up quickly if you’re in an accident or experience a critical illness. Don’t put your health, or your finances, at risk.
Consult with an individual health insurance expert who can show you all your healthcare coverage options. There are affordable plans available for whatever your budget is. Get coverage that protects you today.

If you’re getting ACA Marketplace coverage, open enrollment is typically from November 1 through January 15. Outside of those dates, you could sign up for a private health insurance plan, or you may qualify for a special enrollment period, in case of events like losing your job or divorce.
Private health insurance may offer a better price and/or better health coverage benefits than what’s offered through a work insurance plan. You may consider a free consultation to see what’s available and how a private health insurance plan compares to the plan you’re currently on.
If you’re one of the millions of U.S. workers who’s self-employed, or you’re a “gig worker”, you can contact a private insurance broker to secure your own health insurance when you don’t get it through another employer.
When you’re evaluating individual health insurance plans, consider factors including your age, how much you want to pay in monthly premiums, how often you currently see a doctor or expect to in the future, your current and anticipated prescriptions, any upcoming procedures you have, how much you want your deductible to be and/or if you expect to want to extend your healthcare coverage to a dependent.
