Key Takeaways

  • As the only health insurance carrier in Arizona that offers plans in all 15 counties and the only carrier offering a statewide preferred provider organization (PPO) plan, BCBS offers the most comprehensive health insurance coverage in the state for individuals and families.
  • BCBS is contracted with Abrazo Health, Barrow Neurological Institute, Dignity Health and Phoenix Children’s Hospital. These provider partnerships illustrate the strength of BCBS in the Arizona market.
  • The BCBS statewide PPO network is also contracted with all major hospital networks in AZ (except Mayo). This gives individuals and families more choice in who they see as their preferred provider, but BCBS PPO plans are also more expensive compared to other plan pricing.

What Do ACA Marketplace BCBS Plans Cover?

BCBS is a prominent name in the Arizona health insurance market, as it’s the only carrier in the state that offers plans in all 15 counties. The carrier has several notable contracts with Arizona healthcare providers, including Abrazo Health, Barrow Neurological Institute, Dignity Health and Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

BCBS plans through the ACA Marketplace cover essential healthcare services, including:

  • Free preventive care with $0 primary care provider (PCP) visits, including screenings, flu shots, wellness checks and immunizations, with no copays
  • Doctor visits
  • Prescription drugs, including $0-$3 costs for generic drugs, including prescriptions for diabetes, heart conditions and mental health
  • $0 nurse on-call, where plan holders can talk with a registered nurse in English or Spanish at any time
  • 24/7 online doctor visits, with English- and Spanish-speaking doctors available
  • Mental and behavioral healthcare, including psychiatry and counseling services
  • Outpatient care
  • Emergency care
  • Hospital stays
  • Urgent care
  • Maternity and newborn care
  • Dental insurance and vision care for children

Plan holders can also get discounts on health services and equipment, including vision services and wearable fitness devices. You could also earn up to $100 in rewards for taking preventive care measures, such as attending regular health exams and screenings.

With comprehensive health insurance coverage and a variety of perks for plan holders, it’s no wonder BCBS is a top insurer in Arizona.

Types of BCBS ACA Plans

BCBS offers two types of ACA Marketplace plans: health maintenance organization (HMO) plans and PPO plans. HMO plans are lower-cost but limit plan holders to in-network providers for coverage. With an ACA StandardHealth HMO

with Health Choice Plan through BCBS, members are designated a PCP, who can be changed up to six times a year. Plan holders must receive a PCP referral in order to see a non-emergency, non-urgent specialist. Seeing a doctor who isn’t covered could require full charges.

With BCBS PPO plans through the ACA Marketplace, plan holders can see whichever provider or specialist they want, without a referral. Costs will be higher for out-of-network providers and will be lower for in-network providers. Out-of-state services aren’t covered, unless it’s because of an emergency.

BCBS offers six categories of ACA plans. Each one will have various pricing and benefits. They are:

  • AdvanceHealth HMO: This is a lower-cost plan that includes a low monthly premium, low-cost care and online doctor visits. It’s most recommended for healthy people who want low monthly healthcare costs.
